Hugh Thompson
I'm a strength & health coach. I help people lead more fulfilling lives by encouraging enjoyable and sustainable behaviors.
I came to fitness coaching as a career change in my early thirties, driven by a fascination with how the human body works. But before that, I struggled with exercise for most of my life. I didn't enjoy it, and I never felt like I made meaningful progress. Things started to click in 2010, when I began practicing martial arts and worked with a personal trainer who was also an instructor at my kung fu academy. What I'd been missing was something to train for. We're all told exercise is good for our health and longevity, and that's true. But the older version of you who reaps those benefits is theoretical, and humans are bad at trading present effort for imaginary futures. What changed everything for me, and what I help my clients find, is a benefit that shows up in weeks, not decades.
The Black Creek Story
Black Creek Coaching is named after the place where I spent my formative outdoor time with my dad, near Black Creek and Backswamp in Darlington, South Carolina. It's a reminder of why outdoor pursuits matter: they connect us to the people and places we care about.
I grew up hiking and camping, did some whitewater kayaking as a teenager, and have been getting more serious about hunting in recent years. I'm not an elite outdoor athlete, and I don't pretend to be. I'm a regular person who loves spending time in the woods and on the trails, and I understand what it takes to keep doing that as life gets more complicated.
How I'm Different
I won't try to motivate you with cheerleading or drill-sergeant tactics. When you're struggling, whether in the middle of a workout or just feeling stuck in general, we have a real conversation. I ask questions. I listen. I help you figure out what's actually going on and what might work better.
Sustainable change comes from within, not from me yelling at you or posting motivational quotes. My job is to help you find your own focus, your own motivation, your own reasons to keep showing up. That's what makes progress stick.
I help people bridge the gap between where they are and where they want to be. Not by pretending the work is easy or the same for everyone, but by building practical, sustainable training around what they actually care about.
